IMF mission arrives in Dakar as Senegal grapples with fuel price hike and economic sovereignty concerns
A mission from the International Monetary Fund IMF, led by Ms. Mercedes Vera Martin, is scheduled to visit Dakar from August 19 to September 1, 2026. This visit follows a recent increase in fuel prices in Senegal on August 15. The Senegalese government faces a complex challenge: balancing the preservation of household purchasing power and economic sovereignty with the need to secure a new agreement with the IMF. The government has spent over 245 billion FCFA on fuel subsidies this year, and rising oil prices have increased the cost of these subsidies. The IMF considers the current budgetary situation unsustainable, prompting the government to weigh protecting purchasing power against fiscal discipline and the pursuit of an IMF agreement. The central political question is how far Senegal can assert its economic sovereignty while seeking an agreement with the IMF. This requires Dakar to prioritize between safeguarding purchasing power, maintaining budgetary discipline, and negotiating a new IMF accord.
