Senegal increases fuel prices for super and diesel starting August 15

Super fuel will now cost 990 F CFA per liter, a 70 F CFA increase, while diesel will be 755 F CFA per liter, up by 75 F CFA. This adjustment ends a period of nearly nine months during which motorists benefited from reduced prices. The government stated that prices for other petroleum products, including domestic gas and fuel for canoes, remain unchanged.

This decision reverses a price reduction implemented on December 6, 2025, and is attributed to a significant rise in global oil prices following a conflict in the Middle East that began on February 28, 2026. International diesel and super fuel prices have increased by 69% and 61% respectively since the conflict started. Many countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, India, and China, have already raised their fuel prices.

The Senegalese government had absorbed over 245 billion F CFA in subsidies for the fuel sector since the beginning of the year to protect household purchasing power. Without this adjustment, an additional 47 billion F CFA in subsidies would have been needed between August 15 and September 12, 2026, with projected energy sector subsidies for 2026 reaching 1069 billion F CFA, significantly exceeding the 250 billion F CFA initially budgeted.
