Senate assures Nigerians state police bill harmonization will continue during recess

Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, stated that legislative committees remain active and are committed to expediting the constitutional amendment. The bill has gained significant support and is seen as a crucial security reform. While plenary sessions are suspended until September 14, committee work, particularly by the Constitution Review Committee led by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, will continue without interruption.

Adaramodu expressed confidence that the harmonization will be completed before lawmakers return, noting that the State Police Bill was prioritized due to its urgency and public demand. He also mentioned that the National Assembly has secured cooperation from state legislatures and governors, whose approval is essential for the amendment. Separately, the Presidency announced that President Bola Tinubu is expected to receive the draft Executive National Policing Bill on September 3, which is distinct from the constitutional amendment but will establish the operational framework for the new policing system.
