Illegal miners seize AK-47 rifles from police in Ghana's Ahafo Region
Illegal miners reportedly seized four AK-47 rifles from police officers during an operation at a galamsey site in the Ahafo Region, according to Tanoso Police Commander, ASP Edmond Adjei Kissi. The incident occurred during a police operation in Duayaw Nkwanta and Adroba. ASP Adjei Kissi stated that the Regional Police Commander instructed the officers to return and retrieve the weapons. He highlighted the dangers police face in anti-illegal mining operations, noting that this experience led to a more cautious approach in subsequent operations. In a recent operation to retrieve mining tailings, officers encountered a man named Alhassan but decided against arresting him due to high tensions and security intelligence. The Police Commander also addressed concerns from the traditional council regarding delays in prosecuting suspects, explaining that Alhassan indicated the traditional authorities were awaiting a chief's decision. The traditional council has not followed up on court proceedings. This disclosure comes amidst tensions in the Tanoso area, with the traditional council accusing police of insufficient support in combating illegal mining.
