
Gabon seeks DRC support for AU 2027 summit and ITU council, three agreements signed during Tshisekedi's visit
Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, visited Gabon on August 15 at the invitation of his counterpart, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. The visit, which coincided with Gabon's 66th independence anniversary celebrations, saw a warm reception for President Tshisekedi in Libreville. The two leaders held discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing common interests, including agriculture, infrastructure, transport, energy, mining, health, education, vocational training, digital technology, and culture. President Oligui Nguema presented Gabon's reforms in digitalization, youth employment, women's empowerment, and natural resource valuation. Both presidents emphasized the need to accelerate local processing of African raw materials to create value and support industrialization. President Tshisekedi highlighted the importance of peace and stability for development and called for increased investment in African youth training and development. Regional and continental issues were also discussed, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to protecting the Congo Basin and strengthening Africa's voice internationally. Gabon sought the DRC's support for its candidacy for the International Telecommunication Union Council in Doha in November 2026, and for Libreville to host the African Union Summit in 2027.
