Sainte-Marie Cathedral in Libreville reopens after 15 months of restoration
The Notre-Dame de l鈥橝ssomption Sainte-Marie Cathedral in Libreville officially reopened its doors on August 14, following 15 months of restoration work. The ceremony was presided over by the metropolitan archbishop of Libreville, Mgr Jean-Patrick Iba-Ba, and attended by the President of the Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, his wife Zita, Gabonese bishops, government members, and numerous faithful. The cathedral had been closed for security reasons, necessitating extensive restoration to enhance its appearance and improve conditions for worshippers. The interior now features a ceiling entirely clad in solid wood, large curved brown beams, and light wood slats. Stained-glass windows have been restored, and new solid wood benches complement the interior design, along with an updated sound system. The color scheme includes a beige floor contrasting with yellow interior walls, consistent with the exterior facade. The reopening ceremony included the blessing of the edifice by Mgr Jean-Patrick Iba-Ba, followed by the illumination of the cathedral. The parish priest, Abb茅 Jean Davy Ndangha Mbome Ndong, expressed gratitude to all contributors and acknowledged the presidential couple's commitment to the restoration. The keys to the edifice were officially handed over to the parish priest by Mgr Jean-Patrick Iba-Ba. A message from Pope Leo XIV, commending those involved in the restoration, was also part of the event. The day concluded with a spiritual concert of thanksgiving. On
