Kenya government allocates KSh 2.6 billion for Mau Forest evictees and lifts land caveat
The Kenyan government has released KSh 2.6 billion to resettle 13,000 individuals evicted from the Mau Forest six years ago. President William Ruto announced this during a tour of Narok South, stating that each affected person would receive KSh 200,000 to help them reorganize their lives. Additionally, a caveat on land bordering the Mau Forest has been lifted, allowing landowners to resume agricultural activities without restrictions. President Ruto indicated that this measure provides a long-term solution to political disputes related to the Mau Forest and aims to strengthen conservation efforts for the critical water tower. The government has also acquired 5,800 acres of Cheluget land in Narok South, formerly known as the provincial commissioner's land, to resolve a nearly three-decade-old land dispute affecting about 600 families. Title deeds for this land are expected to be issued next month, providing secure tenure for the residents.
