Duncan Ojwang, President Ruto's nominee for IPOA chairperson, vetted by parliament
Duncan Ojwang, nominated by President William Ruto to chair the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, appeared before the National Assembly's Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security for vetting. Ojwang pledged to maintain independent oversight of police conduct and prioritize training officers to uphold human rights, particularly during public assemblies. He acknowledged that some police practices stem from colonial-era models but emphasized the need for alignment with Kenya's 2010 Constitution. Ojwang also addressed concerns about staff welfare and the lack of security of tenure for senior IPOA staff, linking these issues to funding constraints. He responded to questions regarding his academic background, specifically not having attended the Kenya School of Law, asserting his capability to strengthen IPOA's oversight mandate. His nomination follows the departure of former chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan.
