Kenya's Ministry of Health warns public about fake Postinor-2 emergency contraceptive pills
The Ministry of Health in Kenya has issued a warning to Kenyans regarding falsified Postinor-2 emergency contraceptive tablets found in the market. The Pharmacy and Poisons Board PPB identified the affected product, labeled Batch No. T34197R, which falsely claims to be manufactured by Gedeon Richter Plc. The PPB detected the suspected falsified product during post-marketing surveillance activities. Differences in packaging and presentation were noted when compared to genuine products, including the printing method of the batch number, typographical errors in the patient information leaflet, the carton sealing method, the intensity of the orange color on the packaging, and the font of the logo revealed after scratching the authentication panel. The regulator cautioned that these fake tablets could contain incorrect amounts of the active ingredient, no active ingredient, or harmful undeclared substances, potentially leading to serious health risks and failure to provide the intended therapeutic effect. Healthcare professionals have been advised to verify the authenticity of Postinor-2 stock and quarantine any suspected falsified products.
