NANS demands release or court appearance for detained Osun student leader within 24 hours
The National Association of Nigerian Students NANS, Southwest Zone, has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Osun State Police Command, demanding either the release or court appearance of detained student leader Alalade Felix, known as “Machiavelli.” NANS leaders visited the Osun State Police Command in Osogbo following Alalade's arrest. According to NANS, Alalade's wife reported that police operatives forcibly entered their home around 1 AM and took him away without informing his family of his destination. He was initially traced to Ilesa before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Osogbo. The police allege Alalade is connected to a violent incident during a political procession and claim to have video evidence. However, NANS stated that no such material was presented during their visit to the police command and demanded that any evidence be presented in court. NANS emphasized that an allegation is not a conviction and an investigation is not a sentence, calling for due process. The association urged the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to intervene, stressing the importance of police neutrality ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
