North West school stabbing prompts calls for anger management and psychosocial support
The fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old pupil by a 16-year-old classmate outside Ikatisong Secondary School in Letlhabile, North West, has led to renewed calls for early intervention strategies and psychosocial support in schools. Police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake confirmed the incident, stating that the 15-year-old victim succumbed to stab wounds. The arrested 16-year-old pupil, who was also injured, is expected to face a murder charge in the Brits Magistrate鈥檚 Court. Education expert Hendrick Makaneta emphasized the need for anger management lessons to begin at the foundation phase and for mental health support, including psychologists, to be available for pupils. Kathija Yassim, a professor at North-West University, highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among schools, families, communities, social services, and law enforcement, along with improved access to psychosocial support and conflict-resolution mechanisms for pupils. Both experts stressed that the incident underscores a broader failure in providing a protective environment for children and the importance of identifying warning signs early to prevent violence.
