
Retired military personnel suspend protest after defense minister's assurance on pension adjustments
Retired military personnel have suspended their planned protest following assurances from the Minister of Defence, Gen Christopher Musa retd., that the Federal Government will address their demands regarding pension adjustments and welfare concerns. This decision came after a meeting between representatives of the ex-servicemen and officials from the Ministry of Defence in Abuja. Col Innocent Azubike retd., a leader of the protesters, stated that authorities acknowledged their demands as genuine and have initiated steps to compute consequential allowances. The Minister of Defence, represented by Permanent Secretary Richard Pheelangwah, affirmed the government's commitment to addressing veterans' welfare, remuneration, and pension issues. The ministry's spokesman, Henshaw Ogubike, conveyed that wage and pension adjustments are receiving urgent attention, with relevant authorities engaged to find a sustainable solution. The minister appealed for calm and dialogue, emphasizing that any adjustments to entitlements must be properly computed, funded, and implemented according to existing regulations.
