Federal Government spends N6.47 trillion on infrastructure, highways receive over half
The Federal Government of Nigeria allocated N6.47 trillion to strategic infrastructure development between June 2023 and December 2025, with major highway projects accounting for more than half of this expenditure. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway received the largest share, with N2.23 trillion disbursed for its construction. The Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway followed with N1.11 trillion, and the Trans-Sahara Superhighway received N489.3 billion. These three highway projects alone represent approximately N3.83 trillion of the total infrastructure spending. This spending is part of a broader N30.64 trillion incremental government expenditure aimed at easing the effects of petrol subsidy removal and other economic reforms, which generated N15.8 trillion in savings for the Federation. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, noted that these savings appeared as higher revenue collections due to reforms like the unification of the foreign exchange market. Other significant infrastructure payments included N366 billion for road emergency interventions, N304.2 billion for the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road Section II, and N291.3 billion for the Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road. The government also allocated funds for housing units for armed forces personnel and a multinational security operation.
