Johannesburg settles R5.2 billion Eskom debt, focuses on other service delivery issues
The City of Johannesburg has settled its R5.2 billion debt to Eskom, ensuring continued electricity supply. Eskom confirmed the payment and the city's commitment to future payments, withdrawing legal action. This resolution was facilitated by the Minister of Electricity and Energy, involving a task team from the City of Johannesburg, City Power, and Eskom. While city officials celebrated the payment, residents highlighted other pressing service delivery problems. Mayor Dada Morero acknowledged the city's historical financial obligations and stated that his administration is working to clear a backlog of service delivery delays by instructing the finance department and affiliated entities to settle outstanding debts. Morero also addressed issues with Pikitup, the city's waste removal service, attributing delays to management systems rather than a shortage of personnel. He indicated that improving management at Pikitup is a key focus and expressed confidence in achieving greater efficiency. Pikitup and City Power are set to implement a ring-fenced revenue model from September, allowing them to retain 70% of their revenue for direct operational management.
