Reverend Frank Chikane withdraws from Johannesburg mayoral race, narrowing field to Dada Morero and Loyiso Masuku
Reverend Frank Chikane has reportedly withdrawn from the African National Congress's mayoral candidate race in Johannesburg. Sources indicate that Chikane's family advised him against continuing due to concerns about his health, safety, and the city's general state. His withdrawal leaves incumbent Mayor Dada Morero and his deputy, Loyiso Masuku, as the primary contenders. Chikane, 75, was nominated by the Greater Johannesburg Region and was considered a credible candidate due to his clean record and advocacy for good governance. The ANC Youth League supports Masuku, citing her youth and current position as party chairperson in Johannesburg. However, supporters of Morero argue that Masuku lacks experience for a city the size of Johannesburg. Morero and Masuku are known political rivals, having previously contested for the regional chairperson position.
