Ombalantu Traditional Authority defends Olufuko ceremony amid human rights concerns

Ombalantu spokesperson Isdor Kanelombe stated that the ceremony is a vital cultural practice and that criticism stems from a lack of understanding. He noted that out of 121 registered girls, 26 attended holiday classes, suggesting no widespread dropout. Kanelombe explained that Olufuko traditionally prepares young women for marriage by teaching them about relationships, communication, public conduct, and family responsibilities, with boys undergoing a similar process called 'Etanda'.

Nahas Angula, chairperson of the Sam Nujoma Foundation, emphasized the importance of celebrating indigenous cultures, stating that cultural events like Olufuko help restore heritage lost during the colonial period. He urged girls to prioritize education, echoing founding president Sam Nujoma's emphasis on girls' education. Chief Oswin Mukulu of Ombalantu also advised young women not to view Olufuko as the final step to marriage, but as preparation for adulthood and cultural preservation.
