Ombalantu chief clarifies Olufuko festival's role in young girls' lives, emphasizes continued education

Ombalantu chief Oswin Mukulu addressed young women at the festival in Outapi, explaining that the event educates them about culture, including proper greetings for various groups. He encouraged participants to continue their studies, stating that Olufuko is a traditional milestone, akin to passing matric, after which they should pursue further education. Mukulu highlighted Olufuko as one of several cultural ceremonies practiced by Ovawambo communities, aimed at preserving heritage, understanding origins, and fostering unity.

He urged parents and traditional leaders to instill cultural knowledge in youth and encouraged more young girls to participate in future festivals. This year, 83 girls took part in Olufuko, with 53 from Ombalantu, eight from Ombadja, and 22 from Uukolonkadhi. Mukulu reiterated that the festival is about upholding Ovawambo culture and preparing young people for future family life, not about immediate marriage.
