African nations dominate 2026 Global Finance ranking of poorest countries by GDP-PPP per capita
Nigeria and numerous other African countries are prominently featured among the world's 60 poorest nations in a 2026 ranking by Global Finance magazine, based on GDP per capita at purchasing power parity. Burundi holds the lowest GDP per capita at $994.23, followed by the Central African Republic at $1,437.72 and South Sudan at $1,467.19. Nine of the 10 lowest-ranked countries are in Africa, with Yemen being the only non-African nation in this group. The top 10 poorest countries include Burundi, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Yemen, Mozambique, Malawi, Somalia, Liberia, Madagascar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Nigeria is ranked 56th with a GDP per capita of $9,532.92, a drop from its 44th position in the 2025 ranking.
