Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson discusses switch from England to represent Nigeria in fencing

Esiovwa-Thompson recently made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win gold at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships, triumphing in the men’s U-23 epee event at Rugby School Nigeria. He defeated three Indian opponents on his way to the title, with his grandparents present. This victory followed years of representing England, during which he won several medals.

Esiovwa-Thompson stated that he always longed to fence for Nigeria and believed it was the right path to fulfill his Olympic aspirations. He described the gold medal as a reward for hard work and preparation, expressing happiness at winning in front of Nigerians and his family. Having fenced for most of his life, he credited his international experience for helping him remain composed during the competition.

He also acknowledged the home crowd's support, describing the atmosphere as impactful. The significance of his achievement, becoming Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Fencing Championships gold medallist, only became clear to him shortly before the final. He expressed pride in representing his country.
