Nigerian football stakeholders divided over NFF elections amid calls for reform

This division comes as former internationals highlight the country's recent continental football setbacks as evidence of a system needing urgent reform. Former Dream Team star Abiodun Obafemi lamented the current state of Nigerian football, contrasting it with the 1996 Olympic triumph, following the Super Falcons' elimination from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the Flying Eagles' defeat in the WAFU Zone B Under-20 Championship final, which cost Nigeria qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2027 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, respectively. These setbacks have intensified calls from former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami to temporarily halt the NFF's 2026 Executive Committee elections, arguing that the country's football administration has failed to match its talent and describing NFF elections as a "four-yearly ritual of crisis."

Ebi Egbe, Chief Executive Officer of Monimichelle Sports Facility, supported this view, stating that the current electoral structure, where 37 of 44 Congress delegates are state Football Association chairmen, gives incumbents an overwhelming advantage. However, Ahmed Shuaibu Gara-Gombe, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Athletics and Other Sports Development Commission, rejected Odegbami's position, attributing it to personal interest rather tha
