Ghana government provides GH垄5,500 support package for South Africa evacuees
The Ghanaian government has announced a GH垄5,500 support package for each Ghanaian evacuated from South Africa. This package includes a GH垄5,000 reintegration grant and a GH垄500 travel and transport allowance, along with relief items from the National Disaster Management Organisation and free National Health Insurance Scheme registration. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the two phases of the evacuation will cover nearly 2,000 Ghanaians. The government is also implementing reintegration programs, such as job placement, skills training, and entrepreneurship support, with about 200 jobs already secured through private sector partnerships. A national database will connect returnees with employment opportunities and start-up initiatives. Social workers will conduct six-month follow-up visits, and a dedicated helpline has been established. The government plans a public awareness campaign to combat stigmatization and is establishing a register of claims for compensation for returnees who lost businesses and property. Ghana has also petitioned the African Union to address recurring xenophobic attacks against African nationals, securing the endorsement of ECOWAS Heads of State to pursue the matter at the next AU meeting.
