NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako appeals 20-year conviction in mining license case
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party NPP, has reportedly filed an appeal against his recent conviction and 20-year sentence. The case involves the illegal transfer of a mining license. Wontumi, the first accused, and his company, Akonta Mining Company Limited, the third accused, are challenging the High Court's ruling. Their lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, filed the notice of appeal, stating dissatisfaction with the judgment by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay. The appeal, dated July 28, 2026, includes 20 grounds. Among these grounds, Wontumi's lawyers claim the judgment was unreasonable and unsupported by evidence. They also argue that the trial judge did not properly apply the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 Act 703, as amended, and usurped the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court by interpreting Article 19 of the 1992 Constitution against sections of the mining acts.
