Nigerian welders demand inclusion and fair remuneration in AKK pipeline and other NNPC projects

During their 2026 Annual General Meeting in Lagos, they argued that qualified Nigerian welders should be prioritized in major oil and gas initiatives, citing their technical expertise and international certifications. Prof Abdullahi Maa’ji, Chairman of the AGM, highlighted that Nigerian welders contribute significantly to global welding technology but are often sidelined. He pointed out a disparity in remuneration on the AKK project, where foreign welders reportedly earn up to N3m, while Nigerian counterparts receive N200,000 to N300,000.

Maa’ji called for upholding the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act to ensure greater participation of indigenous professionals, which he believes would reduce costs, create jobs, and retain economic value within Nigeria. The institute has trained many Nigerians, some of whom have secured international employment, including hundreds recently in the Middle East. The AGM also addressed the need to rebuild and rebrand the welding profession, strengthen the institute's governance, and foster unity among members, emphasizing transparency and fairness.
