Nigerian universities to receive $500 million solar power investment

Gigawatt Global, a renewable energy firm, announced its commitment to provide up to 90 percent of the project financing for university-based solar installations. This initiative, unveiled at the launch of the Tinubu Light Initiative in Abuja, aims to address the reliance on costly diesel generators, which often leave campuses with only a few hours of electricity daily. Each university solar plant is expected to generate 10 to 20 megawatts, sufficient to meet campus needs and provide surplus power to surrounding rural communities via prepaid metering systems.

Yosef Abramowitz, CEO of Gigawatt Global, stated that the project will reduce universities' operational costs, increase energy availability, and promote sustainable practices. The company plans to prioritize local manufacturing and services, with local companies responsible for operating and maintaining the facilities. This investment aligns with the Federal Government’s Tinubu Light Initiative, which seeks to expand renewable energy adoption, create jobs, and lower production costs across Nigeria.
