Nigerian government to issue claims forms for South Africa attack victims, seeks compensation

This initiative aims to formally document losses to support compensation claims in ongoing diplomatic negotiations with the South African government. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, announced this after briefing President Bola Tinubu on a meeting with South Africa's Foreign Minister Roland Lamola. Enikanolaiye stated that the data collected will form the basis for lodging claims and exploring compensation options.

President Tinubu agreed with the characterization of the violence as "Afrophobic," targeting Black Africans, and emphasized the need for African unity to end such violence. He also indicated a willingness to leverage his personal relationship with President Cyril Ramaphosa to address the issue. Approximately 1,490 Nigerians have been evacuated from South Africa, with some evacuations funded by private individuals.

The minister confirmed that South Africa has agreed to activate an early warning mechanism and reinvigorate the Bi-National Commission. He stressed that all individuals, regardless of immigration status, have a right to life and should not be subjected to violence. While diplomacy is preferred, Nigeria maintains that all options remain on the table to protect its citizens and their property in South Africa.
