Onion import resumption sparks concern among local producers
The government has announced the resumption of onion imports starting August 31, 2026, lifting a ban imposed on January 16. The initial freeze aimed to support local production and protect small-scale farmers by ensuring domestic supply was sold before foreign products entered the market. However, after seven months, local stocks have diminished, prompting the decision to reopen imports to prevent shortages and control prices. This move has been met with disappointment by producers, who argue the ban did not achieve its intended goals. El Hadji Tacko Ndiaye, president of the Federation of Niayes Producers, stated that the policy inadvertently benefited large agribusinesses. These larger entities, with greater financial capacity, larger landholdings, and cold storage facilities, can hold their harvests, while small producers are forced to sell quickly due to lack of storage and the perishable nature of their crops, often at low prices when supply is abundant. Cheikh Tidiane Ciss茅, secretary general of the Federation of Peanut Basin Farmers, highlighted the disparity in yields, with small producers achieving 30-35 tons per hectare compared to 70-80 tons for agribusiness.
