NHS trials show urine test detects over 90% of bladder cancer cases

The research, published in European Urology Oncology and led by the University of Birmingham and Nonacus, involved nearly 1,000 patients across seven hospitals in England and Scotland. Researchers hope this test could reduce the need for invasive cystoscopies, which involve inserting a camera into the bladder, and help prioritize patients at higher risk for urgent procedures. Over 300,000 cystoscopies are performed annually in the UK, leading to significant waiting lists.

The Galeas urine test checks for over 450 DNA mutations associated with bladder cancer. A negative result indicated a more than 99% chance that the patient did not have bladder cancer. Prof Richard Bryan, co-author from Birmingham University, noted the exciting early performance in a real-world setting.

Michelle Mitchell from Cancer Research UK CRUK emphasized the need for faster, less invasive diagnostic methods, though further research is required. Bladder cancer is more common in men over 60, with blood in urine being a primary symptom, and early detection is crucial for treatment.
