Duke University professor discusses Kenya's development path compared to Singapore
Professor Hiroyuki Hino of Duke University addressed Kenya's National Conversation: Beyond 2030 forum in Nairobi, acknowledging the difficulty for Kenya to match Singapore's development level within 30 to 40 years. He highlighted the significant income gap, with Singapore's income per person exceeding $80,000 last year compared to Kenya's just over $2,000. Despite this, Professor Hino argued that Kenyans possess personal qualities like hard work, motivation, discipline, and cooperation, which can drive extraordinary economic growth, drawing parallels to Asia's rapid economic transformation. The forum, which included policymakers, economists, and the public, aimed to debate Kenya's long-term development blueprint. President William Ruto has previously cited Singapore as a model for Kenya's development, focusing on infrastructure investment, economic reforms, and public service transformation. Ruto emphasized that the national conversation should involve all Kenyans in defining the country's future, building upon the foundation of the Constitution.
