Cabinet blocks US AI crop-monitoring tender
The Namibian government has terminated a N$40 million contract awarded to the American agricultural technology company 6th Grain Corporation. The contract was for deploying an artificial intelligence and satellite system to monitor key staple crops across Namibia, including maize, mahangu, millet, sorghum, and wheat. The Cabinet ordered the cancellation, citing that the agreement did not meet the legal and procedural requirements for government contractual arrangements. Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda confirmed the termination, stating that a comprehensive review found the agreement lacked the necessary legal and procedural compliance. Independent Patriots for Change spokesperson Imms Nashinge supported the Cabinet's decision, raising concerns about national security when a foreign entity monitors food-related matters.
