India drives global increase in planned coal production
New coal mining projects proposed last year are set to increase global coal supplies by 2.5 billion tonnes annually, an 11% rise from the previous year, despite a plateau in demand. Global Energy Monitor reported that India was the primary driver of this increase in 2025, even as the number of new mine openings globally slowed due to decreasing demand for fossil fuels. The states of Jharkhand and Odisha significantly contributed to this surge, doubling their proposals for new coal mines. This aligns with India's Ministry of Coal's plan to boost the country's coal output by nearly 100 million tonnes, reaching 1.15 billion tonnes in the 2025-26 fiscal year. This increase aims to meet India's growing electricity demand, support economic growth, and address more frequent and severe heatwaves exacerbated by the climate crisis.
