Namibia receives remains of Robben Island prisoners and ancestral remains from South Africa
Namibia has repatriated the remains of former Robben Island political prisoners Petrus Niilenge and Festus Nehale, along with ancestral remains, from South Africa. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah received the remains at Hosea Kutako International Airport, stating that their return restores dignity to those whose sacrifices are part of Namibia's history. The event is seen as a moment of remembrance and national healing, honoring the country's sons and ancestors. After a reception ceremony, the remains were transported to the Namibian Police Forensic Science Institute in Windhoek. This repatriation is part of Namibia's ongoing efforts to honor contributors to its liberation struggle against colonialism and apartheid, allowing the deceased to reconnect with their homeland and providing families with an opportunity to honor their ancestors on Namibian soil. The homecoming is expected to foster reflection on the sacrifices made during Namibia's liberation struggle and the importance of preserving their legacies.
