NEMA survey reveals critical environmental and infrastructural issues in Nairobi's Pipeline Estate
The National Environment Management Authority NEMA conducted a multi-agency survey in Pipeline Estate, Embakasi South, Nairobi, on August 4, revealing significant environmental, infrastructural, and socio-economic challenges. The assessment, initiated by a directive from Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, identified severe congestion, unplanned development, deteriorating roads, poor solid waste collection, blocked drainage systems, food safety risks, strained sewerage, and an abandoned quarry site. Pipeline Estate, home to over 200,000 residents, has experienced years of rapid, unregulated construction, pushing basic services beyond capacity. Residents have long complained about traffic, unreliable water, infrequent waste collection, and overflowing sewers. NEMA stated that the coordinated response aims to improve living conditions, environmental management, and public safety, with relevant government agencies instructed to take immediate and long-term corrective actions. NEMA has also engaged Producer Responsibility Organisations under the Extended Producer Responsibility Regulations, 2024, to address waste management.
