IPOA investigates Eric Otieno's death after Muthaiga Police Station arrest
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority IPOA has taken over the investigation into the death of Erick Otieno, who died at Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital in Nairobi after being arrested by officers from Muthaiga Police Station. The National Police Service NPS confirmed Otieno's death and announced that IPOA would conduct a thorough, impartial, and timely inquiry, pledging full cooperation. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations had initiated the initial inquiries. The NPS extended condolences to Otieno's family and urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation. The NPS also encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact them through emergency lines or a DCI tip-off line. Otieno, 19, was arrested along Thika Road and taken to Muthaiga Police Station. His family stated they were unaware of his offense and reported that Otieno called them, claiming officers had assaulted him and asking for KSh 10,000.
