Miru Systems faces scrutiny over past performance as IEBC tender challenged in Kenya

The company has faced fraud allegations and device failures in past elections, including a 70% device failure rate in Iraq's 2018 parliamentary elections, which led to manual recounts. Miru Systems has also drawn criticism in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Philippines, and Argentina regarding the reliability and security of its machines. In the DRC's 2018 elections, issues included illegible voter cards and security vulnerabilities identified by an anti-corruption watchdog.

In the Philippines, Miru secured a large contract for the 2025 elections, despite concerns that the machines were prototypes. Cybersecurity researchers in Argentina demonstrated potential vulnerabilities in Miru's system during the 2015 Buenos Aires elections. In Kenya, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the IEBC of tailoring tender specifications to favor Miru, an allegation the commission denies.

A Kenyan firm, Galadirel Investment Limited, has challenged the tender, leading to its suspension pending a ruling from the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board.
