Mauritius Telecom launches AI and cybersecurity training for young people
Mauritius Telecom, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, has launched a cybersecurity and artificial intelligence awareness program for young people. This initiative supports Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam's budget announcement to train 50,000 Mauritians in new technologies and AI. The first session, held at the MGI auditorium in Moka, gathered approximately 500 Grade 10 and Grade 12 students from educational institutions across the four zones. The program aims to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate a rapidly evolving digital environment, understanding AI's potential, responsible use, and associated digital risks. Experts from Mauritius Telecom, Absa Bank Mauritius Ltd, and Trend Micro led sessions on cybersecurity, online safety, and AI, covering topics like responsible AI tool usage, phishing, online scams, cyberbullying, disinformation, and data protection. Practical demonstrations illustrated manipulation techniques used by cybercriminals. The 500 participating students will also receive 10 hours of free online training from AWS, with the opportunity to earn a free certification. Veemal Gungadin, Chief Executive Officer of Mauritius Telecom, stated that this program transforms the Prime Minister's ambition into concrete actions, preparing young people for both the opportunities and risks of the digital world. The launch was attended by Mahend Gungapersad, Minister of Education and Human Resources; Sarat Lallah
