Martin Amidu warns against political use of Ghana's criminal justice system

Amidu stated that criminal offenses should be addressed without regard for the political interests of the current government, emphasizing that the justice system should not become an instrument of political vendetta. His remarks are part of his critique of the handling of the Asante Kwaku Berko-AKSA bribery case in Ghana, following Berko's conviction in the United States on August 6, 2026. Amidu argued that selective prosecution of corruption and dishonesty offenses against political opponents for electoral gain undermines constitutionalism, the rule of law, and democracy.

He warned that such an approach could intensify political tensions and weaken national unity. Amidu urged governments and state institutions to serve citizens fairly and impartially, irrespective of political considerations, and cautioned against allowing state institutions, funded by the public, to become tools of incumbent governments operating against Ghana's interests.
