Libya's Atomic Energy Corporation proposes rehabilitating Tajoura nuclear reactor for medical use

This initiative aims to reduce the country's reliance on imported isotopes and lower state expenditure on sending patients abroad for nuclear medicine. The project is contingent upon completing comprehensive technical, safety, security, and regulatory assessments, including reassessing the reactor's infrastructure and fulfilling all safety and licensing requirements. Radioisotopes are crucial in nuclear medicine for monitoring organ function, detecting diseases and tumors through medical imaging, and targeted radiation therapies.

This move aligns with the Tripoli Libyan government's policy to localize treatment and reduce costs for citizens and the state.
