Central Bank of Libya reports cyber incident fully contained, recovery efforts ongoing
The Central Bank of Libya CBL announced that a cyber incident reported on June 9 has been fully contained. A source from the CBL stated that comprehensive technical investigations were conducted, yielding significant results, and recovery and system restoration work is continuing according to an approved plan. The CBL has not disclosed the source of the breach and has not commented on social media reports attributing the attack to the Qilin Group, a Russian-speaking cybercriminal organization that claimed responsibility. The Qilin Group reportedly used Qilin ransomware, which encrypts data and demands a ransom for decryption or to prevent data leaks. The CBL source added that technical teams are working to enhance system security and raise the bank's cybersecurity level. Extensive assessments have not detected any confirmed indications of a breach affecting accounts, balances, or financial assets related to the bank's operations or those of related banking entities. The CBL continues to implement stringent security measures to ensure the continuity, stability, and reliability of banking services and maintain confidence in the financial sector. The bank acknowledged the cooperation of security authorities, companies, and technical institutions in addressing the incident and will provide future updates through official channels.
