Libya experiences gradual electricity restoration after widespread blackouts

GECOL's Operation and Control teams are implementing an operational plan to ensure network stability and a safe return of power. The public is urged to be patient as the grid is being rebuilt, a process that cannot be done instantly. GECOL explains that some turbine units are operating in "Island Mode," functioning as standalone power sources, and cannot be directly reconnected to the main grid without proper synchronization of frequency, voltage, and phase angle to prevent damage.

In the event of a complete grid failure, voltage must be gradually restored, and units brought online one by one in a carefully planned sequence. This process is complex and requires time, contrary to public expectations of an immediate restoration. Many Libyans are questioning the situation, especially after the Aldabaiba government stated it had spent billions on network improvements.

Separately, the Tripoli Electricity Police reported that initial inspections suggest the fire at the Najma Substation was caused by an overload, not a criminal act, which was initially thought to have contributed to the grid collapse.
