Kambimba Senior Primary School hostel faces safety and food challenges
Kambimba Senior Primary School in the Kavango East region is seeking assistance to construct a proper community hostel for 66 pupils from surrounding villages. According to school principal Maria Dinyando, the current hostel, built in 2021 from discarded materials, is unsafe and uninhabitable. The facility also struggles with providing adequate food, with children sometimes going days without meals. Pupils from Dithimba, Shanondho, Korokosha, Shakashi, and Mbapuka stay at the hostel to avoid long commutes to school. Dinyando highlighted the urgent need for a new hostel to improve safety, well-being, and educational opportunities, and noted additional challenges including a lack of mattresses, blankets, bedding, and proper sanitation. Parents contribute N$100 per month, which is insufficient to feed the pupils. Aron Mundanya, director of the Mukwe Orphan Vulnerable Children and Youth Support Services OVCS, confirmed that children frequently go without food. The OVCS has secured some donations of maize, rice, cooking oil, eggs, soup, and vegetables from local businesses and its garden, but these supplies are not expected to last. Mundanya appealed to other businesses and individuals for further contributions.
