President Ruto challenges Dr. Gikonyo's claims on Social Health Authority reimbursements
President William Ruto publicly challenged cardiologist Dr. Dan Gikonyo regarding his complaints about the Social Health Authority's SHA reimbursement failures. During the 2026 National Health Summit in Nairobi, Nairobi woman representative Esther Passaris conveyed Gikonyo's message alleging that SHA had consistently failed to reimburse accredited hospitals. President Ruto interjected, requesting specific details rather than general allegations. He then directed SHA CEO Mercy Mwangangi to present real-time reimbursement figures for The Karen Hospital, where Dr. Gikonyo practices. Ms. Mwangangi revealed that SHA had paid over 66% of The Karen Hospital's total claims, amounting to KSh 201,506,857 out of KSh 302,593,226. She also stated that KSh 9.5 million in claims were rejected, and KSh 40,284,778 was returned to the hospital for action. An outstanding balance of KSh 51 million was pending due to missing documentation from The Karen Hospital. President Ruto used this data to directly address Dr. Gikonyo, emphasizing the importance of factual information over general complaints regarding the SHA's conduct.
