Kano State House of Assembly urges Governor Yusuf to address diphtheria outbreak after over 50 child deaths

The motion, moved by Ibrahim Muhammad, member representing Rano Constituency, highlighted the severity of the outbreak in Ridin and Sabuwar Kaura. Muhammad noted that while emergency measures, including medication and health worker deployment, have been taken, further intervention is needed. He urged the Governor and the state Commissioner for Health to provide additional emergency support, expressing concern about the recurrence of the outbreak after a similar incident last year.

Usman Abubakar Tasiu, representing Kiru Constituency, stated that the outbreak has spread to communities in Kiru, including Kwarin Dangora, Dangora town, and Yelwa, and mentioned an APC youth leader in Kiru town lost two children to the disease. Tasiu called for an emergency committee to address the outbreak in affected local government areas like Rano, Tudun Wada, Kibiya, Bunkure, Bebeji, and Kiru. Saleh Ahmad, representing Dawakin Tofa, urged intensified vaccination and preventive measures due to the contagious nature of diphtheria.
