Kano State establishes committee for Almajiri education and welfare reform

This initiative, approved by Governor Abba Yusuf, aims to create a sustainable framework for regulating and integrating the Tsangaya education system, while also ensuring the welfare and dignity of the children involved. The committee is chaired by Abdulkarim Maude, SAN, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, with Amina Yargaya, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, serving as secretary. Its diverse membership includes representatives from government, traditional institutions, religious bodies, the legal profession, education sector, and child-rights advocacy groups.

The committee's mandate includes assessing the existing Tsangaya system, developing regulatory frameworks, creating a roadmap for implementation, and recommending measures to eliminate exploitative practices and strengthen child protection. It will also examine funding mechanisms and promote engagement with various stakeholders. The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim, expressed confidence that the committee will produce practical recommendations to improve educational opportunities and welfare for Almajiri children.
