Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project in Tanzania: A major infrastructure and development initiative

Located on the Rufiji River within the Selous Game Reserve, the project includes a large dam, a hydropower plant, and associated electricity transmission infrastructure. The Egyptian consortium, comprising Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric, invested approximately $2.9 billion in the project. The dam is 1,036 meters long, 131 meters high, and has a reservoir capacity of around 34 billion cubic meters.

The powerhouse is equipped with nine hydropower turbines, each with a capacity of 235 MW. The electricity generated will be connected to Tanzania's national grid. The project aims to significantly strengthen Tanzania's electricity generation capacity, support industrial and agricultural development, regulate Rufiji River flows, reduce flood risks, store water, and contribute to wildlife protection.

It also serves as an example of Egypt-Tanzania development cooperation and showcases the capabilities of Egyptian companies in executing major international projects.
