Ghana Revenue Authority warns travellers about duty on multiple mobile phones
Aaron Kanor, Customs Commissioner for the Ghana Revenue Authority GRA, has advised travellers returning to Ghana against carrying more than two mobile phones, stating that exceeding this limit constitutes commercial importation and is subject to duty. Speaking at the Accra International Airport, Kanor clarified that an individual is entitled to carry one phone for personal use and potentially one for a spouse without incurring duty. Any additional phones will be considered commercial goods, attracting import duties. He emphasized that expensive phones like iPhones and Samsung devices contribute significantly to revenue. This warning follows a December 2025 incident where a traveller claimed extortion after paying import duty on 18 mobile phones. The GRA, in a statement on December 11, 2025, confirmed the traveller arrived on December 5 with 18 undeclared phones and accessories, exceeding personal concessions under the Exemptions Act 2022 Act 1083, and was processed through standard Customs procedures, denying any extortion or detention.
