Child Protection Network Nigeria reports 36 child abuse cases, highlights trafficking and illegal adoption concerns
The Child Protection Network Nigeria has reported receiving at least 36 child abuse cases within a few months, encompassing physical abuse, neglect, child trafficking, sexual abuse, and illegal adoption. Olakunle Sanni, the National Coordinator, disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja, urging national action to strengthen child protection. He noted that these cases reflect broader challenges faced by children across Nigeria, including sexual abuse in various environments, and condemned the culture of silence surrounding such issues. Sanni called for stronger enforcement of child protection laws, faster prosecution of offenders, and increased support for survivors. He also highlighted child trafficking, exposing children to domestic servitude, sexual exploitation, and forced labor, and condemned physical abuse. The coordinator identified child abduction, particularly from schools, as a major threat and called for improved security measures. While acknowledging legitimate adoption processes, Sanni expressed concern over its alleged abuse for trafficking and exploitation, citing the sealing of Divine Hope Orphanage and Less Privileged Home for alleged illegal operations and child trafficking.
