President Tinubu orders 500 additional CNG stations, aiming for 1,000 nationwide
President Bola Tinubu has directed the establishment of an additional 500 compressed natural gas CNG refuelling stations, bringing the total planned under the Presidential CNG Initiative to 1,000. This announcement followed discussions with the Governors’ Forum, where governors resolved to reduce transportation costs in their states by utilizing CNG and electric vehicles. President Tinubu stated that the Federal Government is significantly investing in the energy transition, expanding conversion centers and refuelling infrastructure. Over 120,000 vehicles have already been converted nationwide, with 100,000 more conversion kits in progress. The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund is financing over 100 gas projects, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations, with four projects commissioned in May in Lagos, Abuja, and Owerri. The expansion of CNG stations is crucial for intra-state transportation, where Nigerians experience the highest costs. Both federal and state governments have agreed to form a joint committee to implement measures to reduce transport costs, with the goal of lower transport fares by October 1, as CNG vehicles spend 60 to 80 percent less on fuel than petrol vehicles.
