Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces dissolves as independent military force
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces SDF announced its dissolution as an independent military force on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards integrating its fighters into Syria鈥檚 state institutions. SDF commander Mazloum Abdi stated in a televised speech that the group was dissolving as an independent military force with full responsibility. This action follows a March 2025 agreement signed by President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi, which aimed for the SDF's integration into Syrian institutions. The agreement emphasized the preservation of Syria鈥檚 territorial unity and rejected partition. This dissolution occurs as Syria鈥檚 new authorities under President al-Sharaa work to alleviate internal tensions and reconstruct the nation, which has been severely impacted by nearly 14 years of civil war and decades of international isolation under former President Bashar al-Assad.
