IPC opposes Sandpiper phosphate mining project over environmental and health concerns

The project, which involves offshore phosphate mining through seabed dredging, received an environmental clearance certificate on August 5. IPC shadow minister of environment and tourism Rodrick Likando highlighted negative consequences in countries like Tunisia, Jordan, and Nauru that have engaged in phosphate mining. He stated that communities in these nations experienced issues such as poisoned water, sick children, barren land, and economic decline after resources were depleted.

Likando specifically mentioned high rates of cancer and respiratory conditions in children near phosphate mines in Tunisia. He also noted Nauru's collapse into poverty after its reserves were exhausted, with profits largely benefiting foreign operators. Likando argued that the environmental and social impact assessment for the Sandpiper project has not withstood independent scrutiny, emphasizing the fragility of Namibia's marine environment and the potentially irreversible nature of marine ecological damage.
