IMF delegation to visit Dakar for discussions on a financing agreement

The purpose of the visit is to continue discussions with Senegalese authorities to achieve convergence on policies and reforms that could be supported by an IMF financing agreement. This visit follows a recent increase in fuel prices in Senegal, which opposition figure Ousmane Sonko attributed to IMF dictates, while others view it as a necessary step for an agreement. The IMF stated its commitment to supporting Senegal's efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability and promote sustainable, inclusive growth.

During their visit, IMF services will also engage with various economic and social stakeholders. Last month, the President of the Republic met with Zeine Zeidane, Director of the IMF's African Department, a meeting that both parties noted showed full convergence on the necessity and urgency of concluding an IMF program. This program is expected to preserve public investment, create opportunities for private sector-led activities, and strengthen social safety nets.

An earlier IMF mission, also led by Mercedes Vera Martin, visited Senegal from June 15 to 19 to assess macroeconomic developments, including the impact of the Middle East conflict on Senegal's economy and public finances, and to review financing needs.
